PC Stuff

I know I have been pretty quiet the last couple of weeks. I have to go back to work today after my two days off. I ended up working somewhere around 70 hours or so this week, and most of my off time was spent working on PCs, a few of mine, and a couple for other people.

I've spent the better part of the last 24 hours in a data recovery "operation" trying to pull some movies and pictures off of a defunt NTFS drive, and finally have had good results with it this morning. Couple with the fact that I am using Stephanie's computer to post, things are going a much more smoothly than they were. It's not that I don't like my laptop, but it is slow and a bit of a pain in the ass. I am used to being able to have six or eight programs open, with it, I have to stick with one, maybe two, or it starts to crawl.

I actually have lot's of stuff to write down, but no time today. Maybe I will have some time this afternoon. The next few days at work don't look to be any easier than the last few before my days off. Right now I am just looking forward to September 8th. Another vacation. Having taken my last one so early in the fiscal year, I should be able to sneak an extra one in this year, which will be nice.

Next Tuesday though, is the Queensryche concert, that will be cool. We are taking Christopher to his first concert. I am sure that he would like it to be someone much more cool from this decade, but I am pretty sure that he will have a good time. I have managed to "infect" him with a liking for classic rock and metal, which is definately a good thing considering some of the music coming out now.

Laptop Blogging

Maybe I will just start using my ipaq to blog with. This thing is ok for balancing the checkbook, and checking my email, but otherwise it is a big pitfa.

Catfish suggested that I add a PC to my santa list, which I may just do. Hopefully I will have something built in the next few weeks though. I probably have enough parts to build a couple of computers left over from repairing my media server, just not quite as fast as the last one. That's ok though. Better than this.

I was visiting some sites on my blogroll a little while ago when firefox crashed for the 3rd time tonight. fuck it, I think it's time to work on another PC I am supposed to fix for someone anyway.

Technology has failed me again

Actually it hasn't failed so much as sputtered to a halt. My damn HTPC, through which 90% of the media in my household flows through, and my home automation software runs on, AND acts as my tivo, DVD player, etc...has been crapping out lately. I may have a heat problem, or the CPU may be going bad. Not sure yet. I am going to back up all of my info from my PC which is the fastest in the house, and make IT the media center over the next few days. Now that I am used to being able to record unlimited amounts of movies and TV (limited only be hard drive space) and pause, rewind, etc, I really miss it when it is not available. I have a slow as crap laptop that my dad gave us for Chris to use for homework, but he doesn't use it, so I shall start. I've taken it with me on my last couple of trips, and even though it is slow as shit, it'll do me fine for blogging, balancing the checkbook, and surfing the web. Hopefully the money situation will get better by Christmas or early next spring and I can build myself a new one. A goddamn behemoth faster than fucking light computer.

Posting from my iPaq...

...while dinner is on the stove got me to thinking about how pissed off I am right now at Handango. If you are not familiar with them, they provide a central location for the downloading and purchase of software for handhelds.

Since I cannot sync my ipaq and PC, but my wife wants something called Sodoku, I figured that I would download a demo or purchase it straight from the ipaq. You can no longer access the site, at least with this one. I was forced to download a catalog app and use it. It won't let me download demos, only have the option to purchase. Ok, tried that and it tells me the file cannot be found on the server. Six different apps and I get the same message. Fuck you Handango.
